Phoebe and Brett’s Engagement Shoot

Phoebe and Brett booked their wedding photography with me about two years ago… these guys have got their planning down to a fine art! We haven’t caught up since our first meeting all those months ago, so it was nice to catch up and have a chat about their wedding day. They live down in Mandurah so it was real good of them to make the drive up for the photoshoot. Being the cruisy, surfing types, the beach was the natural location choice! And have you noticed how hazy the Perth sky has been lately? Smoke from a bush fire down south apparently. Well the haze acts as kind of giant softbox for the sun, taking away the harsh glare and shadows. It makes for some pretty sweet photos… here’s a few from the shoot that I like! Baby Photography with Archer Watkins

Archer Watkins is a very serious little man. He sat me down at the start of this baby photoshoot in Kings Park and said “Look Gav, I dont really do photos. All the baby talk and the coo cooing and the trying to make me smile – it’s just not my bag. But Im here for Mum and Dad. They’ve been pretty good to me the last few months, you know, bringing me up and stuff, so Ive agreed to this photoshoot because I like to see them happy. So just do your job, and no mucking about, see?” After our little talk I thought I was going to be in for a very hard time, but I think Archer softened to the idea of the photoshoot as time went by. By the end of it he was even making suggestions – “Hey Gav, how about you just photograph my foot… Ill put it here. And then have Mum and Dad in the background all blurry?” Some of his ideas were really good and can be seen amongst these images below, my favourites from the photography session. I love his facial expressions!

Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is generally thought of as taking place in a big studio with seamless walls and big lights pointing in all sorts of directions. I’ve never had the pleasure of being photographed in this way, but I imagine it would freak me out. Too much formality, too much pressure to smile. I find people are much more relaxed in a location setting – either at somewhere we’ve chosen, or in their own home, or in my home. Here’s a few pics from some of my recent portrait shoots in and around Perth.

Yvonne is a translator from Germany who needed some images to use on her marketing material. The brief could be summed up in three c’s I guess: corporate, casual, characterful. Here’s what we came up with:

Lunde and Liv are the proud parents of little Sam, one of the cutest kids ever. He was really new at the time of this shoot, and already showed a natural talent in front of the camera The boys going places I tell ya!

We met up with Dae-in Cha, his wife Sakiko and their little boy Eugene in Kings Park on the morning of Eugene’s first birthday. The wildflowers were just out, and Eugene got dressed up n his traditional Korean outfit especially for the occasion! Two hours of shooting and he didnt cry once… in fact he pretty much giggled the whole way through!

Portrait Gigglers

Portrait photo sessions are fun… but with Dani and Hannah a portrait shoot is just plain funny. I grew up on the next door farm to these girls in Zambia, and since then their propensity to giggle at the most random of things has only increased. Place them in front of a camera and some lights, and it increases even more! I think the joke was on me most of the time A situation like this is actually quite handy for a photographer, because because wedged in between the silliness some lovely natural portraits present themselves. These images were taken at the girls parents place in Capel, outside Bunbury, a beautiful smallholding covered in thick native trees and a small lake (unfortunately dry at this time of year). My favourite thing about them? Dani’s shoes in the first photo!

Thanks Hannah and Dani, you were good models! Next time we’re getting your parents involved… maybe some make-up and hair styling for your Dad even?!?!?

Portrait shoot with ‘TZ Tobez’ and Ali

Originally a Tanzanian, Tobez has snagged himself his Australian sweetheart, Ali, and the two are packing up shop in Perth and making the bold move back to Tanzania. Before they left we managed to catch up for a beer, a chat, and of course a photoshoot! Ali grew up next to the beach in Perth, and Tobez was never far from the coast in his home town of Tanzania, so it only seemed natural that the beach was our location of choice for this portrait session. Of all the beaches in Perth I think Trigg is my favourite as a photography location. The combination of rocky feature, white sands and gentle waves almost guarantees unique portrait images. These are some of the photos we got on that day – I like the silhouette ones the best I think. I think they sum up the sun setting on a chapter of Tobez and Ali’s lives. What do you reckon?
